What We Believe
While we have a historic connection to the Lutheran immigrants, our faith extends back to those first disciples who walked with Jesus. We believe that Jesus is the only begotten Son of God who came to bear God's creative and redeeming love to all the world. "We worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity," as the Athanasian Creed professes. Our ties to the historic and universal church come through these statements of faith that have formed faith for generations.
We take the Bible seriously. It forms our worship life, our devotional life, and we proclaim the Gospel of healing, grace, love, and reconciliation that comes to us from God in Christ Jesus. We believe that the bible was written for us, but not to us. It challenges us where we feel comforted but also comforts us amid the challenges of life. This is what it has done for the descendants of Abraham, those who wandered in the wilderness, those who awaited the Messiah, those who walked with Jesus, and modern disciples.
What is a Lutheran?
Martin Luther never wanted to separate from the church or have his name used for a religious group. Luther wanted believers to focus on Christ Jesus, not him. He wanted believers to understand that we are saved by God's grace, through faith in the crucified and risen Christ Jesus. This means that our actions cannot earn salvation, nor do we have to be "good enough" for God's to love us. God's love is seen in the life, death and resurrection of Christ, as well as the Sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion.
Since our founding in 1885, Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church has been a vital part of Merrill, Wisconsin. Our story is one of faith, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to the Gospel. Established by immigrants from different nations, their faith was what united us. Over the years, the multi-ethnic body of Christ has been a place were the spiritual needs of all are met. We have grown into a sanctuary for all who seek peace and purpose in the North Woods.
